Since I first went backpacking almost 40 years ago, I have been a total gear-geek. One of the first books I read,
The New Complete Walker - Colin Fletcher, inspired me to have a better understanding of what gear to take and how to use it so i would have an enjoyable backpacking trip. I also read Night of the Grizzlies - Jack Olsen just before my first solo trip as a teenager which really freaked me out! I had a great trip although mostly sleepless nights. Technologies have certainly changed since then and I have continued to educate myself through practical field-testing of equipment in my constant goal to find the optimal gear. I worked at one of the largest outdoor specialty retailers as a full-time employee and I was responsible for training new sales people on outerwear and footwear. While there, I added to my knowledge by attending numerous manufacturers' product trainings and of course from other employees. So, does this mean I am an "Expert" .. Well, one definition of an expert is "somebody from out-of-town who thinks they know it all and tells too many people"! Hopefully, you don't perceive me in this manner but simply as somebody who is sharing their knowledge of backpacking gear in the hopes it will improve your backpacking experiences. I started Boulder Backpacking with that goal in mind and to see if I could leverage my knowledge to: 1) Make some money so I can spend more time volunteering and exploring the outdoors. 2) Donate more money to some great organizations. Feel free to email me with your comments and suggestions. If I don't get back to you quickly... well you can probably guess where I am! Thank you for your business and support.
